Located southeast of Charlotte, Stallings is a small suburban town with easy access to the city. This community-centric town has friendly neighborhoods and plenty of nearby spots for recreational activity.

Stallings is a small suburban community located southeast of Charlotte. The busy I-74 corridor brings commuters from Stallings to Center City Charlotte in about a half hour, putting plenty of opportunities for employment, shopping, dining and entertainment within reach. Additionally, I-485, the loop surrounding Charlotte, runs alongside Stallings which makes it highly accessible to and from communities and attractions within the region. With a population of more than 15,000, Stallings has seen significant growth since 2000, when the population was about 3,000.

 

Annual community events in Stallings include Stallings Fest, an annual Easter egg hunt, Earth and Arbor Day festivities, movie nights and concerts in the park. The city’s park, Stallings Municipal Park, contains three athletic fields, picnic areas, two sitting arbors, a splash pad, and a disc golf course. Blair Mill Park is another nearby park known for its disc golf course. There are a number of golf courses in the area, including Pebble Creek Golf Course, Matthews Tennis Swim & Golf, Divide Golf Club, and more.

Stallings has three public schools in Union County Public Schools, and there are nine private schools in the Stallings vicinity. Residents of Stallings are located near several institutions of higher learning, including Wingate University, Johnson & Wales University, Queens University, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and more.

 

History

The history of Stallings dates back to the early 1900s when Matthew Thomas Stallings, a farmer and merchant from Harrisburg, bought 200 acres of wooded land in Union County on the border of Mecklenburg County. He operated a country store near the Seaboard Railway Track, and had a vision for building up the settlement and encouraging enterprise and industry in the vicinity.

 

Mark Conder started the town’s first industry by opening a saw mill. Conder’s brother, Martin Stallings, moved to Stallings, and purchased another tract of land for farming. It was at this point that the settlement became known as Stallings. Every year after the crops were laid, Martin Stallings would host a picnic with foot races, sack races, egg races and other games. This tradition continued through the years and became known as Stallings Fest, which still occurs to this day. The town of Stallings was officially incorporated in 1975.
