History
Before the arrival of Europeans in the 1800s, the rolling hills of Mathews were home to the Waxhaw tribe. Over time, the area’s rich game and forests attracted hunters, traders, lumberjacks and farmers. The town was originally called Stumptown, then later changed to Fullwood, until it was named after Matthews’ train station, which is still in operation, in 1874.
